Comment on parsing: In some languages, the form of a phrase headed by words like “such as,” “for example” or “including” may suggest a relatively independent functional role. In Japanese, for example, such a phrase can be followed by a period and surrounded by parentheses in the middle of a larger sentence. For ease of comparison, this study treats such a phrase in the same way in each language – generally as a modifying proposition. This is the case for both language versions of [2] shown above.
